On Tuesday evening, President Donald Trump released a video to Twitter demanding Congress to amend the $900 billion stimulus and spending bill that he calls a “disgrace”.
After Congress only allotted $600 for American citizens, President Trump unleashed on them, demanding that they up the ante by issuing checks of $2,000.
“Send me a suitable bill or else the next administration will have to deliver a COVID relief package. And maybe that administration will be me,” the president says in the video.
“I am asking Congress to amend this bill and increase the ridiculously low $600 to $2,000, or $4,000 for a couple,” Trump says in the video.
“I am also asking Congress to immediately get rid of the wasteful and unnecessary items from this legislation, and to send me a suitable bill, or else the next administration will have to deliver a covid relief package, and maybe that administration will be me,” Trump said.
The move from the President caught many off guard and even gathered some support from the most unlikely people in Congress: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Rashida Tlaib.
“Me and @AOC have the amendment ready,” Tlaib said after President Trump made the announcement. “Send the bill back, and we will put in the $2,000 we’ve been fighting for that your party has been blocking.”

“Let’s do it,” Ocasio-Cortez joined in. “@RashidaTlaib and I already co-wrote the COVID amendment for $2,000 checks, so it’s ready to go. Glad to see the President is willing to support our legislation. We can pass $2k checks this week if the Senate GOP agrees to stand down.”
Even Speaker Nancy Pelosi seemed to agree with President Trump.
“Republicans repeatedly refused to say what amount the President wanted for direct checks. At last, the President has agreed to $2,000 — Democrats are ready to bring this to the Floor this week by unanimous consent,” Pelosi tweeted. “Let’s do it!”
Senator Lindsey Graham chimed in: “Appreciate the fact that Speaker Pelosi supports President @realDonaldTrump’s idea to increase direct payments to $2,000 per person. The American people are hurting and deserve relief. I know there is much bipartisan support for this idea. Let’s go further.”
