Few actors in Hollywood are actually brave enough to stand in front of their celebrity peers and profess their love of God and Christ. Matthew McConaughey is one of those, and he wants you to know that the culture in Hollywood is so hostile that his fellow Christian celebrities actually feel afraid to speak out and actually hide their faith for fear of being blacklisted.
And he didn’t stop there during his time on the Joe Rogan Experience as first reported by the Daily Wire.
While speaking to Rogan, the “Interstellar” actor confessed some things that Hollywood may not appreciate. For one, he called the gilded cage “illiberal,” which is exactly the opposite of how the celebrity community likes to bill itself, adding that this illiberal Hollywood left is often “condescending and patronizing” to half the American population.
“One of the things that … some people in our industry, not all of them, but there’s some that go to the Left so far—as our friend Jordan Peterson [says]— that go to the illiberal Left side so far that it’s so condescending and patronizing to 50% of the world that need the empathy that the liberals have,” McConaughey told Rogan.
One of the topics that McConaughey applied this to is Hollywood’s treatment of Christians and Christianity.
“I have had—and I won’t throw any people under the bus—but I have had moments where I was on stage receiving an award in front of my peers in Hollywood, and there were people in the crowd that I have prayed with before dinners many times, and when I thanked God, I saw some of those people go to clap, but then notice that, ‘bad thing on my resume’ and then sit back on their hands,” McConaughey said.
“I’ve seen people read the room and go, ‘whoa, that wouldn’t bode well for me in the future,’ if for getting a job or you’re getting votes or what have you,” McConaughey continued. “I have seen that; I’ve witnessed that. … I don’t judge them for it, I just wish, you know—that it seems like a silly argument.”
McConaughey admits that he’s become a large enough A-lister that his faith doesn’t penalize him. He told Rogan that he is shamelessly a religious man and disassociated with the idea that he’s “spiritual and not religious” as many in Hollywood like to say.
McConaughey makes it apparent that he lives his life unapologetically, even if it defies mainstream thought. Other actors do this as well. Marvel actor Chris Pratt is also an unabashed Christian and American patriot who has been dragged through the mud over it by online hard-left mobs.
Pratt was defended by his fellow Marvel actors, including Robert Downey Jr., who made it clear that Pratt is a good man and a better friend. This caused the “illiberal left” to turn on the Marvel actors and even go so far as to lob racist comments at co-star Zoe Saldana.
While it’s just a few actors here and there, McConaughey and Pratt’s open Christianity may inspire others to come forward. It won’t be an easy task to complete. Pratt has received his fair share of undeserved hatred, but with support from other actors like McConaughey, Hollywood may turn a corner. Its bigotry and intolerance may ebb.
Time will tell, but in the meantime, it’s good to have people like these two actors disrupting the place and creating a counter-culture that could lead to a better mainstream stage.
When that happens, Hollywood may actually start making better movies.
